On the morning of April 6 1941 the Germans launched a Blitzkrieg attack on the kingdom of Yugoslavia. Within a week Belgrade had surrendered and the dismemberment of Yugoslavia began. Amongst the spoils of war was the Serbian (or Yugoslav) Banat. This was the western portion of the Banat (historically known as the Banat of Temesvar), relinquished by Hungary under the terms of the Treaty of Trianon in 1920.
