Inhaled β2-agonists are commonly used as bronchodilators in the treatment of asthma. Their use in athletes, however, is restricted by anti-doping regulations. Controversies remain as to whether healthy elite athletes who use bronchodilators may gain a competitive advantage. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess the effects of inhaled and systemic β2-agonists on physical performance in healthy, nonasthmatic subjects. To this end, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane… Expand
Pharmacological management in elite athletes
TLDR
The unpredictable pharmacokinetics of salbutamol and GC has and will continue to cause problems for elite athletes and their medical advisors are discussed in detail with mention of pitfalls for athletes and some of the potential issues that may arise. Expand
Asthma Medication Is Increasingly Prescribed for Finnish Olympic Athletes—For a Reason?
TLDR
The use of combination therapy of LABAs and ICSs is increasing among Finnish Olympic athletes, and this trend is worrying as it is not based on increasing occurrence of symptoms, asthma diagnoses, or objective lung function measurements. Expand
The Impact of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction on Athletic Performance: A Systematic Review
TLDR
The evidence concludes that whilst it is reasonable to suspect that EIB does impact athletic performance, there is currently insufficient evidence to provide a definitive answer. Expand
Medical and pharmacological approach to adjust the salbutamol anti-doping policy in athletes
TLDR
By using conditions in accordance with the experts’ clinical and safety guidelines for asthma management in athletes undergoing an intense exercise bout, this study suggests that the urine sal butamol concentration threshold could be lowered to redefine the rule supporting the decision to sanction an athlete for salbutamol abuse. Expand
Inhaled salbutamol does not affect athletic performance in asthmatic and non-asthmatic cyclists
TLDR
The inhalation of salbutamol induced a significant increase in resting lung function in EVH+ and EVH− athletes but this improvement in lung function did not translate to improved exercise performance, and sal butamol had no discernible effect on key ventilatory and exercise parameters regardless of EVH challenge outcome. Expand
The Ergogenic Effect of Long-term Use of High Dose Salbutamol
TLDR
Athletes using inhaling salbutamol to treat bronchoconstriction during exercise on a daily basis will not gain an advantage over nonasthmatic athletes not using inhaled sal butamol. Expand
Beta-2 Agonists
TLDR
Beta-2 agonists are drugs that selectively mimic the actions of the endogenous catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine, which increase pulmonary function and have many downstream actions on the cardiovascular and metabolic systems. Expand
Effects of inhaled bronchodilators on lung function and cycling performance in female athletes with and without exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.
TLDR
The inhalation of salbutamol induced a significant increase in lung function in female athletes, but this increased lung function did not translate to improved exercise performance. Expand
Diagnosis and management of exercise induced bronchoconstriction in athletes
TLDR
It was concluded that elite footballers have a high EIB prevalence and treatment with inhaler therapy reduces EIB severity and may also lead to improved exercise performance. Expand
Effect of salbutamol on the cardiovascular response in healthy subjects at rest, during physical exercise, and in recovery phase: a randomized, double-blind, crossover study
TLDR
Administration of salbutamol increased rest heart rate; however, did not change heart rate, blood pressure and perceived exertion during exercise or recovery, suggesting that the sal butamol administration is safe and does not affect exercise intensity prescription in healthy subjects. Expand
