Tumour markers can aid in areas such as diagnosis, surveillance of recurrence, staging and prognosis. This article focuses on 2 tumour markers, α-fetoprotein (AFP) and β-human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). These tumour markers have been examined for their utility as prognostic indicators in 2 different manners. First, the marker level at diagnosis has been studied to determine if it is prognostic of outcome presumably because of its relation to tumour bulk or to the biological nature of the…
Tumor markers in infancy and childhood.
TLDR
Reference values for serum AFP in the neonatal period and infancy up to 2 years of age have been established from normal term babies who did not have additional factors associated with AFP elevation, and Elevations of serum AFP can be seen in association with certain nonneoplastic conditions, most commonly in acute liver disease, such as extrahepatic biliary atresia and hepatitis.
Serum and Cerebrospinal Fluid Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in Intracranial Germ Cell Tumors
TLDR
It is concluded that these two markers, and mostly βhCG, may be useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of the response to therapy of patients with intracranial germ cell tumors.
Human chorionic gonadotropin: Unknown about known
TLDR
The most important discoveries about the role of hCG and its hyperglycosylated analog are elucidated, both accomplished and still upcoming.
Telomerase Inhibition Decreases Alpha-Fetoprotein Expression and Secretion by Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cell Lines: In Vitro and In Vivo Study
TLDR
Both the inhibition of telomerase and the inhibited of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway decreased the AFP production of HepG2/C3A and PLC/PRF/5 cells, suggesting a relationship between telomersase and AFP expression through the PI-Akt-mTOR pathway.
Tumour Markers and Kidney Function: A Systematic Review
TLDR
Each tumour marker was found to be differently influenced by these criteria; additionally it was revealed in many cases a lack of available published data.
Pitfalls in testing for common tumor markers
The effect of clomiphene citrate and human chorionic gonadotropin on the expression of CatSper1, CatSper2, LHCGR, and SF1 genes, as well as the structural changes in testicular tissue of adult rats
TLDR
It seems that clomiphene citrate reduces the process of spermatogenesis and the detrimental impacts of this compound would be neutralized by the administration of HCG.
Prognostic implications of serum alpha‐fetoprotein response during treatment of hepatoblastoma
We evaluated the outcomes and prognostic factors, especially serum levels of alpha‐fetoprotein (AFP) and their changes during the treatment of hepatoblastoma (HB).

Prognostic significance of early serum tumor marker half-life in metastatic testicular teratoma.
TLDR
Early evaluation of MHL by this method does not predict patients at higher risk of progression after front-line chemotherapy, and also is a poor guide to long-term prognosis.
Prognosis of intracranial germinoma with syncytiotrophoblastic giant cells treated by radiation therapy.
Serum tumor marker half-life during chemotherapy allows early prediction of complete response and survival in nonseminomatous germ cell tumors.
TLDR
Lack of appropriate decay of serum tumor markers can identify patients unlikely to achieve CR or prolonged survival and thus can be used to select patients during treatment who may benefit from an early change to more aggressive therapy.
Timing and magnitude of decline in alpha-fetoprotein levels in treated children with unresectable or metastatic hepatoblastoma are predictors of outcome: a report from the Children's Cancer Group.
TLDR
For children with unresectable or metastatic HB, early changes in AFP levels are a reliable predictor of outcome and can be used for identification of poor responders to treatment, ie, patients whose AFP level fails to decrease 2 logs before second surgery should be considered for alternative treatment.
Serum tumor marker decline is an early predictor of treatment outcome in germ cell tumor patients treated with cisplatin and ifosfamide salvage chemotherapy
TLDR
Serum tumor marker regression was studied in patients treated with ifosfamide‐based chemotherapy for cisplatin‐resistant germ cell tumors to investigate the role of marker regression as a predictor of treatment outcome.
