Adiponectin, an adipokine whose plasma levels are inversely correlated to metabolic syndrome components, protects against atherosclerosis and reduces myocardium infarction-associated risks. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are involved in vascular repair and their number is reduced in patients with cardiovascular disease.
