Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) has been in widespread use since the beginning of the 1990s. The initial indications for VATS were benign lesions of the lung, pneumothorax, benign tumors, etc. However, its application was extended to resection of lung cancer. We first gained experience with VATS lobectomy in September 1992, and also started performing lymphadenectomy using VATS in November 1993 after developing instruments for this meticulous operation.
