  • Signs and symptoms of meningococcal meningitis are indistinguishable from those associated with acute meningitis caused by other meningeal pathogens (eg, Streptococcus pneumoniae). In severe and fatal cases of meningococcal meningitis, raised intracranial pressure is a predominant presenting feature. The overall case-fatality rate for meningococcal disease is 10% and is higher in adolescents. Death is associated with coma, hypotension, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and absence of meningitis.
