Beyond regulation of sexual function, male steroids play an important role in many physiological homeostasis systems, including the cardiovascular system. Via a specific androgen receptor, testosterone mediates cardiomyocyte trophicity both in physiological situations and in hypertrophy-related cardiac diseases.
