The serum levels of the squamous cell carcinoma associated antigen (SCCAg) were measured in 50 patients with esophageal carcinoma by immunoradiometric assay before and after surgery. 32 patients were subjected to curative surgery, 15 palliative operation, 3 exploratory thoracotomy. After curative surgery, the elevated level dropped rapidly to normal within 72 hours. The SCCAg levels showed statistical differences.
