Two types of genes were found in the study of transformation in yeast Pichia methanolica: transforming (Trg) and nontransforming (Ntg) genes. Transforming genes (P-ADE7,4 and S-LEU2), as linear DNA molecules, can transform competent cells with high efficiency inversely proportional to the molecule size. Nontransforming genes (P-ADE5 and H-LEU2) transform P. methanolica cells at an extremely low rate even when they are combined with transforming genes.
