It was shown that malate dehydrogenase of isolated membranes of the gramicidin S producer Bacillus brevis var. G.-B. (R.-form) is completely inhibited by the antibiotic (approximately 200 mkg/mg of protein). Succinate and NADH dehydrogenases at concentration up to 1 mg per mg of protein are insensitive to it, while corresponding oxidases are inhibited by the antibiotic not more than by 65 -- 75% apparently due to partial damage of the terminal parts of the respiratory chain. The respiration of… Expand
Antimicrobial peptide gramicidin S is accumulated in granules of producer cells for storage of bacterial phosphagens
A comprehensive view on the biosynthesis of gramicidin S (GS) in Aneurinibacillus migulanus is presented, having observed a peripheral membrane localization of its synthetases. Expand
Proteomic Response of Bacillus subtilis to Lantibiotics Reflects Differences in Interaction with the Cytoplasmic Membrane
By drawing on a proteomic response library, including other envelope-targeting antibiotics such as bacitracin, vancomycin, gramicidin S, or valinomycin, YtrE could be identified as the most reliable marker protein for interfering with membrane-bound steps of cell wall biosynthesis. Expand
Proteomic response of Bacillus subtilis to lantibiotics reflects differences in 1 interaction with the cytoplasmic membrane 2 3 Running title : Proteomic response to lantibiotics
24 Mersacidin, gallidermin, and nisin are lantibiotics, antimicrobial peptides containing 25 lanthionine. They show potent antibacterial activity. All three interfere with cell wall 26 biosynthesisExpand
The Multifaceted Antibacterial Mechanisms of the Pioneering Peptide Antibiotics Tyrocidine and Gramicidin S
The results shed new light on the multifaceted antibacterial mechanisms of these antibiotics and explain why resistance to them is virtually nonexistent. Expand
Characterization of lipids in membrane vesicles from scrapie-infected hamster brain.
The lipid compositions of membrane vesicles from scrapie-infected and uninfected hamster brains were examined before and after detergent extraction, and an unidentified lipid was found to absorb u.v. radiation strongly from 250 to 300 nm wavelengths. Expand
Bacterial response to membrane‐active peptide antibiotics
Durch die Zunahme bakterieller Antibiotika-Resistenzen sowie durch sinkende Zulassungsraten neuer antibakterieller Wirkstoffe existiert ein dringender Bedarf fur neue Antibiotika. Substanzen, die dieExpand
