OBJECTIVE Ceramide, the backbone of sphingolipids, is the key component affecting atherosclerotic changes through its important second-messenger role. Previous studies have demonstrated protective role of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) genes in regulating atherosclerosis and hypertension.
