BACKGROUND The combined use of liquid media and solid media is recommended for mycobacterial culture. We evaluated diagnostic performance of combination of BACTEC Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT; Becton Dickinson, USA) and 2% Ogawa media (Korean Institute of Tuberculosis, Korea) for recovery of mycobacteria. METHODS In September 2007, 1,764 specimens from 1,059 patients were cultured with MGIT and Ogawa. Acid fast bacilli (AFB) smear was fluorochrome-stained. The isolates were…
Comparison of Ogawa Media, BACTEC MGIT 960 System and TB/NTM Real-Time PCR for Detecting Mycobacterium Species
TLDR
Culturing with a combination of MGIT and Ogawa is recommended to increase the recovery rate of mycobacteria and although PCR missed a reasonable number of NTM, it is faster and usually gives results that concur with those from the culture.
Usefulness of the BACTEC MGIT 960 System for Mycobacterial Culture and TB Ag MPT64 Immunochromatographic Assay to Identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis
TLDR
MGIT increases the detection rate and shortens the recovery time of mycobacteria in clinical respi- ratory specimens, and the TB Ag MPT64 kit using ICA is useful in identifying MTB in a positive MGIT culture.
Evaluation of the Quantamatrix Multiplexed Assay Platform system for simultaneous detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the rifampicin resistance gene using cultured mycobacteria.
Rapid Diagnosis of Tuberculosis and Multidrug Resistance Using a MGIT 960 System
TLDR
The automated MGIT 960 system for culturing and DST of M. tuberculosis was successfully introduced in a hospital laboratory setting in Korea with significant shortening of the turnaround time.
Performance of a real-time PCR assay for the rapid identification of Mycobacterium species
TLDR
Real Myco-ID® is an efficient tool for the rapid detection of NTM species as well as MTB and sensitive and specific and comparable to conventional methods.

TLDR
The data show that the diagnostic performance of the iTPA method is comparable to that of RQ-PCR, suggesting that it could be a reliable and cost-effective option for the identification of MTC from broth culture.
The Increase of Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Isolation in the Specimens from Respiratory System in Jeju
TLDR
A clinical diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis based on respiratory system specimens should be made with caution, especially in cases of positive AFB smears, as the proportion of NTM isolation is increasing in Jeju, Korea.
Increasing Trend of Isolation of Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria in a Tertiary University Hospital in South Korea
TLDR
The rate of NTM isolation has steadily been increasing at the hospital in South Korea, likely due in part to the use of liquid media for the culture.
Performance of the Quantamatrix Multiplexed Assay Platform system for the differentiation and identification of Mycobacterium species
TLDR
The QMAP system yielded rapid, highly sensitive and specific results for the identification of MTBC and NTM and accurately discriminated between NTM species within 3 h.

TLDR
MB/BacT is superior to BactEC MGIT 960 and egg-based media for the recovery of mycobacteria from sputum specimens and considerable improvements are necessary for the clinical application of BACTEC MGit 960.
Comparison of mycobacteria growth indicator tube with BACTEC 460 for detection and recovery of mycobacteria from clinical specimens
TLDR
Although the sensitivity of MGIT was equivalent to that of B460, MGIT required a longer incubation than did B460 to become positive (P < 0.05), the recoveries of AFB with combinations of media were as follows: MGIT + LJ, 93.2%; B460 + Lj, 92.1%; and MGIT = B460 / LJ / MGIT, 96.6%.
Mycobacterial growth and bacterial contamination in the mycobacteria growth indicator tube and BACTEC 460 culture systems
TLDR
The data suggest that the BACTEC 460 and the MGIT systems are approximately equivalent in cost and ability to support the growth of AFB.
Use of BACTEC MGIT 960 for Recovery of Mycobacteria from Clinical Specimens: Multicenter Study
TLDR
It is concluded that the BactEC MGIT 960 system is a fully automated, nonradiometric instrument that is suitable for the detection of growth of tuberculous and other mycobacterial species and that is characterized by detection times that are even shorter than that of the “gold standard,” the BACTEC 460 system.
Multicenter Evaluation of the BACTEC MGIT 960 System for Recovery of Mycobacteria
TLDR
The BACTEC MGIT 960 system is evaluated, which is a fully automated, noninvasive system for the growth and detection of mycobacteria with a capacity to incubate and continuously monitor 960 7-ml culture tubes, and the greatest number of isolates of M. tuberculosis complex were recovered.
Use of Molecular Methods To Identify the Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex (MTBC) and Other Mycobacterial Species and To Detect Rifampin Resistance in MTBC Isolates following Growth Detection with the BACTEC MGIT 960 System
TLDR
The biomass obtained in MGIT at the time of growth positivity in the 960 system is sufficient for use in all three molecular tests, and this approach can reduce the turnaround time for reporting results.
Evaluation of the BACTEC MGIT 960 system for the recovery of mycobacteria.
[The role of simultaneous combination culture with solid and liquid media for diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis].
TLDR
Retrospective study of sputum-culture-positive pulmonary tuberculosis cases in a hospital with tuberculosis ward finds simultaneous combination culture of Ogawa medium with MGIT is useful, mainly for risk management of MGIT contamination.
Evaluation of BACTEC MGIT 960 and BACTEC 460TB Systems for Recovery of Mycobacteria from Clinical Specimens of a University Hospital with Low Incidence of Tuberculosis
ABSTRACT Clinical samples obtained over a period of 8 months (n = 2,624) were processed in parallel with the BACTEC 460TB system, with the MGIT 960 system, and in Löwenstein-Jensen (LJ) medium,
Recovery Rate of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria from Acid-Fast-Bacilli Smear-Positive Sputum Specimens
TLDR
This study examined the recovery rate of NTM from the AFB smear-positive sputum specimens in a tertiary hospital in Korea to determine whether the AFB observed on the smear may represent either M. tuberculosis or nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM).
