We studied the effects of simvastatin (MK 733), a new competitive inhibitor of HMG CoA reductase, alone and in combination with a bile acid sequestrant, cholestyramine, on serum levels of lipoproteins and apoproteins A1 and B, in 24 patients with familial hypercholesterolemia. After simvastatin treatment (40 mg/day) alone for 12 weeks, serum total and low density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased by 31 and 36 percent respectively. With the addition of cholestyramine, there was a 41 per cent… Expand
Simvastatin. A review of its pharmacological properties and therapeutic potential in hypercholesterolaemia.
TLDR
If further study confirms long term tolerability and an impact on cardiac mortality and morbidity, then simvastatin and others of its class should offer a significant new approach to the treatment of hypercholesterolaemia. Expand
Addition of fibrates to simvastatin therapy in hyperlipidaemic patients
TLDR
A long-term study to investigate combination therapy with simvastatin and bezafibrate in patients with either familial hypercholesterolaemia or combined hyperlipidaemia and found that this side-effect appears to be rare. Expand
Mechanisms of action in the liver of crilvastatin, a new hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitor.
TLDR
The findings suggest that a drug such as crilvastatin could have a hypocholesterolemic effect by a mechanism other than the sole inhibition of cholesterol synthesis, possibly by stimulating cholesterol and bile salt secretion via the biliary tract in previously hypercholesterolesmic rats. Expand
Comparaison de l'efficacité de la simvastatine et du gemfibrozil dans l'hypercholestérolémie primaire
TLDR
Simvastatin was more efficient on total cholesterol, LDL-C and apo B, and the increase of HDL-C is similar in both groups of patients, while the level of triglycerides was further decreased by gemfibrozil. Expand
Effect of pioglitazone and its combination with statins in coronary artery disease patients with hyperinsulinemia.
TLDR
The data suggests that pioglitazone should be given preferably to the patients with hyperinsulinemia and statin should not be coadministered. Expand
EFFECTIVENESS AND TOLERABILITY OF SIMVASTATIN VERSUS PRAVASTATIN
TLDR
No significant differences were found between the two drugs with regard to effectiveness or tolerability, and a significant reduction in plasma total cholesterol and LDL was found in both treatment groups. Expand
Diagnosis and treatment of familial hypercholesterolaemia.
TLDR
The diagnosis of FH and the goals of therapy are considered and the current and potential future treatment options for patients with FH are reviewed. Expand
TUBEROUS XANTHOMA :A RARE PRESENTATION OF FAMILIAL HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA
TLDR
A case of FH is reported in an 11 year old female child which is alerted by multiple nodular lesions over the buttock, knee and elbow and shows focal aggregates of foamy macrophages with a conclusion of Tuberous Xanthoma. Expand
