Radix Hedysari (the root of Hedysarum polybotrys Hand. -Mazz.) polysaccharides (RHPS) produced in Gansu province were analysed. Their immunomodulatory and antitumor activity in mice were studied. Hydrolysate of RHPS yielded D-glucose, D-rhamnose, D-galactose, L-xylose and galacturonic acid. RHPS predominantly enhanced the phagocytic index of macrophages (control: 2.0±0.3,RHPS 1 g/kg 2.4±0.5, RHPS 2 g/kg 2.7±0.5) and the E-rosettes formation rate (control 18.6±2.6, RHPS 1 g/kg 26.6±3.1, RHPS 2 g…

Enhancing effect of antitumor polysaccharide from Astragalus or Radix hedysarum on C3 cleavage production of macrophages in mice.

The results suggest that the immuno-potentiating action of APS and RHPS may be related to the activity of mouse complement C3.

Comparison of the Immunoregulatory Function of Different Constituents in Radix Astragali and Radix Hedysari

Comparison of the immunological effects of extracts of Radix Astragali and Radix Hedysari showed that flavonoids and saponins present in RA and HQ were not only structurally significantly different but also different in their immunological effect.

Antidiabetic properties of purified polysaccharide from Hedysarum polybotrys.

Results suggest that HPS3 may partly ameliorate hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia associated with type 2 diabetes through increased insulin secretion, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, promotion of sensitivity to insulin, suppression of gluconeogenesis and reduction in the biosynthesis fatty acid, cholesterol and cell cytokines related to insulin resistance.

Bioactive Polysaccharides from TCM Herbs as Anti-Cancer Adjuvants

Bioactive polysaccharides occur extensively in TCM herbs and is the basis of potential useful application of TCM as adjuvant in cancer therapies, especially as adjuvants in cancer treatment.
