OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of self-measurement of blood pressure (SMBP) in controlling hypertension. DESIGN Randomized, controlled, pragmatic, open study. The unit of randomization was the basic health care unit (BCU), consisting of 1 physician and 1 nurse.
