BACKGROUND Antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies (ANCA) are directed against antigens located in the cytoplasm of neutrophil granulocytes and monocytes. Detection of ANCA has proved to be a useful diagnostic tool for a group of systemic vasculitis, especially Wegener's granulomatosis.
