G eorgetown University has for a very long time sought to celebrate its historical milestones by commissioning histories for the occasions. On the occasion of its centenary in 1889 then President Joseph Havens Richards approached the preeminent historian of the Catholic Church in the United States, John Gilmary Shea, to do a history of the university during its first century.
