At the end of 1991 James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man passed out of copyright protection and into the public do main in both the United States and the United Kingdom. This change in its legal situation spurred the publication of numerous editions of the novel as it became legally available to any publisher in these two coun tries. The reinstatement of copyright several years later in the U.K. slowed the process, but allowed those editions that had been published to continue…
