African freshwater crabs are a typical example of taxa for which the archival aspect of museum collections has played a vital role in obtaining insight in species diversity and distribution patterns. For instance, initiatives that aim to assess and safeguard biodiversity of freshwater habitats in eastern Africa have relied heavily on existing information from museum collections to obtain baseline information on the distribution and possible vulnerability of crab species (IUCN, 2004).
