Multiple steps and critical behaviors of the binding of calcium to alginate.

The results reveal three distinct and successive steps in the binding of calcium to alginate with increased concentration of Ca ions, which closely correlate with the Ca/guluronate stoichiometry expected for egg-box dimers and multimers with 2/1 helical chains.

A reversible aggregation of junction zones is found during dehydration and rehydrated gels, and the different stabilities of initial bonds and bonds formed during drying are speculated to be the contribution of MG block or short G blocks in the junction zones.
