The future of plastic optical fiber
The number of services providing large-volume information content, such as high-definition movies, continues to increase rapidly. Single-mode glass optical fiber (SM GOF), which has been widely…
High-bandwidth graded-index polymer optical fiber
- Y. Koike, T. Ishigure, E. Nihei
- Physics
- 1 July 1995
High-bandwidth (2 GHz/spl middot/km) graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF) was successfully obtained by the new interfacial-gel polymerization technique in which the unreactive component was…
Which is a more serious factor to the bandwidth of GI POF: differential mode attenuation or mode coupling?
- T. Ishigure, H. Kano, Y. Koike
- PhysicsJournal of Lightwave Technology
- 1 July 2000
It is clarified for the first time that the effect of the mode coupling on the bandwidth characteristic is very small in the graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF) compared with in the…
Progress in low‐loss and high‐bandwidth plastic optical fibers
Plastic optical fibers (POFs) are highly promising transmission media for future home networking. In comparison to glass optical fibers (GOFs), which are commonly used in core and metropolitan…
Optimum refractive-index profile of the graded-index polymer optical fiber, toward gigabit data links.
- T. Ishigure, E. Nihei, Y. Koike
- PhysicsApplied Optics
- 20 April 1996
The results indicate that even if the refractive-index distribution is tightly controlled, the bandwidth of the graded-index POP is dominated by the material dispersion when the required bit rate becomes larger than a few gigabits per second.
High-power and high-gain organic dye-doped polymer optical fiber amplifiers: novel techniques for preparation and spectral investigation.
- A. Tagaya, S. Teramoto, E. Nihei, K. Sasaki, Y. Koike
- Materials ScienceApplied Optics
- 20 January 1997
High-power and high-gain amplification was achieved for RB-doped GI POFA's based on the spectral investigation of dyes in PMMA bulk and it should be noted that amplification in the low-loss region of polymer optical fibers was achieved in the R6G- and O4PC-dopeGI POFA.
Theoretical and experimental investigation of rhodamine B-doped polymer optical fiber amplifiers
- A. Tagaya, S. Teramoto, K. Sasaki
- Physics
- 1 December 1995
High-power (620 W) and high-gain (28 dB) amplification was achieved by a rhodamine B (RB)-doped GI polymer-optical fiber amplifier (POFA) with a l-m length. A theoretical analysis of the…

High-Bandwidth Plastic Optical Fiber for Fiber to the Display
- Y. Koike, T. Ishigure
- PhysicsJournal of Lightwave Technology
- 1 December 2006
The concept of "Fiber to the Display" is proposed, where GI POF is directly distributed to display from main server in a building or house, where real-time face-to-face communication with high-definition-television quality becomes possible, which cannot be achieved by current technologies.
Optimum index profile of the perfluorinated polymer-based GI polymer optical fiber and its dispersion properties
- T. Ishigure, Y. Koike, J. Fleming
- PhysicsJournal of Lightwave Technology
- 1 February 2000
The significant advantages in bandwidth and low material dispersion of perfluorinated (PF) polymer-based graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF) are theoretically and experimentally reported for…
