A novel actinomycete strain was isolated from a soil sample collected in Japan by using gellan gum as a solidifying agent and it is proposed that this strain should be classified in a novel genus and species, Longispora albida gen. nov.

The producing strain, AM-2282 was classified as a new species and the name, Streptomyces staurosporeus AWAYA, TAKAHASHI and OMURA, nov. is proposed to show antimicrobial activity against fungi and yeast.
