A functionally specialized population of mucosal CD103+ DCs induces Foxp3+ regulatory T cells via a TGF-β– and retinoic acid–dependent mechanism
- J. Coombes, K. R. Siddiqui, F. Powrie
- BiologyJournal of Experimental Medicine
- 6 August 2007
It is shown that after antigen activation in the intestine, naive T cells acquire expression of Foxp3, and RA is identified as a cofactor in T reg cell generation, providing a mechanism via which functionally specialized gut-associated lymphoid tissue DCs can extend the repertoire of T reg cells focused on the intestine.
Small intestine lamina propria dendritic cells promote de novo generation of Foxp3 T reg cells via retinoic acid
- Cheng-ming Sun, J. Hall, Y. Belkaid
- BiologyJournal of Experimental Medicine
- 6 August 2007
It is shown that peripheral conversion of CD4+ T cells to T reg cells occurs primarily in gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) after oral exposure to antigen and in a lymphopenic environment, and that the intestinal immune system has evolved a self-contained strategy to promote T reg cell neoconversion.
Expression of Helios, an Ikaros Transcription Factor Family Member, Differentiates Thymic-Derived from Peripherally Induced Foxp3+ T Regulatory Cells
- A. Thornton, P. E. Korty, E. Shevach
- BiologyJournal of Immunology
- 1 April 2010
Results demonstrate that Helios is potentially a specific marker of thymic-derived T Reg cells and raises the possibility that a significant percentage of Foxp3+ Treg cells are generated extrathymically.
CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells control Leishmania major persistence and immunity
- Y. Belkaid, C. Piccirillo, S. Mendez, E. Shevach, D. Sacks
- Biology, MedicineNature
- 5 December 2002
It is shown that the persistence of Leishmania major in the skin after healing in resistant C57BL/6 mice is controlled by an endogenous population of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells, indicating that the equilibrium established between effector and regulatory T Cells in sites of chronic infection might reflect both parasite and host survival strategies.

Commensal Bacteria Control Cancer Response to Therapy by Modulating the Tumor Microenvironment
- Noriho Iida, A. Dzutsev, R. Goldszmid
- Biology, MedicineScience
- 22 November 2013
Optimal responses to cancer therapy require an intact commensal microbiota that mediates its effects by modulating myeloid-derived cell functions in the tumor microenvironment, and disruption of the microbiota impairs the response of subcutaneous tumors to CpG-oligonucleotide immunotherapy and platinum chemotherapy.
The Alarmin IL-33 Promotes Regulatory T Cell Function in the Intestine
- C. Schiering, T. Krausgruber, F. Powrie
- BiologyNature
- 20 June 2014
It is shown in mice that the IL-33 receptor ST2 is preferentially expressed on colonic Treg cells, where it promotes Treg function and adaptation to the inflammatory environment, and suggests that the balance between IL- 33 and IL-23 may be a key controller of intestinal immune responses.
Natural regulatory T cells in infectious disease
- Y. Belkaid, B. Rouse
- BiologyNature Immunology
- 1 April 2005
Various situations in which the balance between natural Treg cells and effector immune functions influences the outcome of infection are described and how manipulating this equilibrium might be exploited therapeutically are described.
Regulatory T cells and infection: a dangerous necessity
- Y. Belkaid
- Biology, MedicineNature reviews. Immunology
- 1 November 2007
Current hypotheses and points of polemic associated with the origin, mode of action and antigen specificity of the various populations of regulatory T cells that arise during infection are discussed.
The human skin microbiome
- Allyson L. Byrd, Y. Belkaid, J. Segre
- BiologyNature Reviews Microbiology
- 15 January 2018
In this Review, amplicon and shotgun metagenomic DNA sequencing studies that have been used to assess the taxonomic diversity of microorganisms that are associated with skin from the kingdom to the strain level are described.
