Endophytic Bacterial Diversity in Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Roots Estimated by 16S rDNA Sequence Analysis

This is the first report that archaea has been identified as endophytes associated with rice by the culture-independent approach, and the results suggest that the diversity of endophytic bacteria is abundant in rice roots.

Two obligate anaerobes, TB8106(T) and WZH410, which degraded propionate in syntrophic association with methanogens, were isolated from two upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors, one treating brewery wastewater and the other bean curd wastewater, finding that the strains could not ferment fumarate, and grew at a more alkaline pH range than Syntrophobacter fumaroxidans.
Proteiniphilum acetatigenes gen. nov., sp. nov., from a UASB reactor treating brewery wastewater.
A new genus and species, Proteiniphilum acetatigenes gen. nov., is proposed, with strain TB107T (=JCM 12891T=AS 1.5024T) as the type strain, with <91 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the closest species with validly published names.

High levels of DNA-DNA relatedness and HSP60 gene sequence similarity were determined between B. thermacidophilum AS 1.2282(T) and strain P3-14(T), indicating a closer relationship between them, and a novel Bifidobacterium subspecies is designated.

The broad substrate spectrum identified the ZC-I methanogens to be a member of Methanosarcinaceae, and could represent a novel sub-branch specifically inhabited in cold ecosystems, and to be an important player in the methanogenesis of Zoige wetland.
