Emotional effects in each task for both genders were positively correlated with self-reported cognitive empathy, which was indexed by the perspective taking (PT) and fantasy (FS) subscale, but not with affective empathy.

The results indicated that the counselors’ self-other distinction began at the early automatic process stage and continued until the late cognitive evaluation stage, which might prevent them from being overly involved in the clients’ experiences and relieve their personal distress.
