Two ”well-known” marine suctorian ciliates isolated from coastal waters near Qingdao (Tsingtao), China, were reinvestigated using both live observations and protargol impregnation methods to provide improved diagnoses for both species.

Members of the heterotrich genus Spirostomum are commonly found in freshwater or low salinity biotopes in Qingdao, China and it is hypothesized that S. minus and S. teres might represent species complexes.
