A polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) transient recorder setup was realized enabling for the first time to our knowledge the monitoring of fast PMD fluctuation with a bandwidth of up to 1 MHz. Thirty-six hours of observation of an installed field fiber exhibits significant PMD variation within 10 ms.
Field trials were carried out to determine the statistics of fast polarization changes in optical networks. Important data enabling the definition of speed requirements for PMD compensators and adaptive equalizers could be obtained.
Optical systems and technologies have been radically changing the telecommunication networks for past 15 years; today wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology, optical amplifiers, and simple optical switching elements like optical add-drop multiplexers (OADMs) are used in the backbone networks of all operators worldwide. Optical systems nowadays… (More)
In DWDM field experiments over 1047 km of standard fiber and in simulations we analyze the impact of crosstalk on a 43 Gb/s RZ-DQPSK channel both by 10.7 Gb/s OOK and 43 Gb/s RZ-DQPSK neighbors at 50 GHz channel spacing.
PMD induced system outage probabilities have been measured in a joint field trial of NTT and DT. For outage evaluation 43-Gbit/s CS-RZ signals of the NTT WDM system were transmitted over selected high-PMD fiber links of DT's fiber network.
Low-loss chip to-fiber coupling can be achieved by on-chip spot-size transformers. Two simple versions using laterally tapered InP-InGaAsP waveguides at the 1.55 /spl mu/m wavelength have been fabricated: one consisting of two differently tapered layers, the other with only one taper. The influence of the taper shape and of fabrication tolerances on their… (More)
A new concept for a highway switch, which can be used to connect different optical wavelength division multiplexing data highways for data exchange, is proposed and the system relevant properties are outlined. For the required add-drop filter elements we used ring resonators. Typical characteristics of channel bandwidth, channel spacing, free spectral… (More)
A new POTDR measurement technique is used to investigate the spatial distribution of PMD in deployed fibers. Results help to identify high-PMD fiber sections that need to be replaced to enable 40Gbit/s transmission and beyond.
Data rates generated in the access network by new services and customer demand on triple play influence on the transmission capacity and flexibility of the transport network. A field trial to upgrade an existing DWDM link with 10 Gbit/s RZ- and NRZ-channels by 40 Gbit/s RZ-DQPSK-channels was performed on a link consisting of legacy G.652 fibre with two… (More)
We present two 8/spl times/170 Gbit/s DWDM/OTDM (1.28 Tbit/s) field transmission experiment both over more than 400 km in commercially operated legacy networks of France Telecom (FT) and Deutsche Telekom (DT), respectively. Conventional EDFA based amplification schemes as well as distributed Raman amplified systems are tested. For different levels of… (More)
