Illuminating gravitational waves: A concordant picture of photons from a neutron star merger
- M. Kasliwal, E. Nakar, W. Zhao
- PhysicsScience
- 16 October 2017
It is demonstrated that merging neutron stars are a long-sought production site forging heavy elements by r-process nucleosynthesis, which is dissimilar to classical short gamma-ray bursts with ultrarelativistic jets.
Propagation properties of dark solitons.
- W. Zhao, E. Bourkoff
- PhysicsOptics Letters
- 1 July 1989
It is shown that nonlinear dark pulses in optical fibers are more stable than bright pulses with respect to loss and noise.
High energy and high efficiency 3.4 μm extracavity KTA optical parametric oscillator
A high energy and high efficiency extracavity KTiOAsO4 (KTA) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with excellent stability and beam quality, which is pumped by a Q-switched single-longitudinal-mode…
Femtosecond pulse propagation in optical fibers: higher order effects
- W. Zhao, E. Bourkoff
- Physics
- 1 February 1988
Higher-order effects in femtosecond-pulse propagation in optical fibers are examined. In particular, the specific contributions to nonlinear chirping in the fiber by the higher-order cubic dispersion…
Time-domain terahertz spectroscopy and applications on drugs and explosives
Many materials of interest to the forensic and security services, such as explosives, drugs and biological agents, exhibit characteristic spectral features in the terahertz (THz) frequency range.…
Interactions between dark solitons.
- W. Zhao, E. Bourkoff
- PhysicsOptics Letters
- 15 December 1989
An empirical expression for the separation of two solitons as a function of initial separation and traveling distance is deduced, which agrees well with numerical results.
Generation of dark solitons under a cw background using waveguide electro-optic modulators.
- W. Zhao, E. Bourkoff
- PhysicsOptics Letters
- 15 April 1990
A novel method for generating dark solitons with a cw background by using broadband guided-wave electro-optic modulators and stimulated Raman scattering to permit the observation of soliton effects in the fiber is proposed.
Periodic amplification of dark solitons using stimulated Raman scattering.
- W. Zhao, E. Bourkoff
- PhysicsOptics Letters
- 1 August 1989
It is found that an all-optical, repeaterless, and stable system for dark-soliton transmission at a rate of 20 GHz over thousands of kilometers in a lossy fiber is achievable, if periodic amplification using stimulated Raman scattering is incorporated.
Highly efficient and compact cavity oscillator for high-power, optically pumped gas terahertz laser.
A highly efficient and compact terahertz cavity oscillator that is based on z-cut crystal quartz used as the dichroic beam splitter, for the first time to the best of the knowledge, is demonstrated.
