Emission and atomic absorption spectroscopy measurements showed that iron is present in significant amounts in DMFase, indicating that it is an iron-containing amidohydrolase.

This work has used rumen microorganisms from sheep in order to degrade lignoeellulose-rich waste products in continuous cultures and found that the number of citiates in the culture remained very high during cultivation periods of more than 6 months.
