This paper presents the Remote Device Access (RDA) package developed at CERN in the framework of the joint PS/SL Controls Middleware project. The package design reflects the Accelerator Device Model in which devices, named entities in the control system, can be controlled via properties. RDA implements this model in a distributed environment with devices(More)
Fault management is a challenging research topic, and the ultimate goal – automation – is still far away. We believe that important progress can be made by studying management from a software engineering perspective, and by integrating functionality into applications to make them more manageable. In this article, we discuss methods and functionality for the(More)
One of the major threats to the E-mail service are message loops, mail messages which endlessly circulate between a number of E-mail relays and severely deteriorate or even interrupt the messaging service. Although the standards ruling E-mail communications include mechanisms to prevent message loops, these mechanisms are often unimplemented and, if they(More)

The Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) is a central piece for LHC ion operation at CERN, transforming long Linac3 pulses into high density bunches needed for LHC. The first phase of LEIR commissioning successfully attained its goal of providing the so-called “early ion beam” (one bunch of 2.25 10 Lead ions) needed for the first LHC ion runs with reduced luminosity.(More)
as a ECOOP Workop. Included in the book are a summary of the presentations and discussions at the workshop and the twelve accepted and presented papers. We would like to thank all those who helped to make WCOP'97 a success. Most importantly, we thank all participants for coming and contributing to the lively and interesting discussions. Many thanks also to(More)
The construction of the LHC experiments control systems will require the integration of a wide range of COTS or custom components: hardware such as instruments, controllers, fieldbuses and sensors as well as applications, for example, for operator control and visualisation or for subsystem supervision. This integration may require a non negligeable effort if(More)

This article presents the design and implementation of a software component for automated monitoring and diagnostic information analysis of a particle accelerator and its control system. The information that is analyzed can be seen as streams of events. A Complex Event Processing (CEP) approach to event processing was selected. The main advantage of this(More)
