Bioaccumulation of six PCB indicator congeners in a heavily polluted water reservoir in Eastern Slovakia: tissue-specific distribution in fish and their parasites
TLDR
Data on PCB accumulation in perch infected with acanthocephalans demonstrated a decline of PCB values in all organs as well as in adipose tissue compared to noninfected fish, which could indicate that some parasitic organisms may influence positively their hosts in PCB-contaminated environment.
Perch and Its Parasites as Heavy Metal Biomonitors in a Freshwater Environment: The Case Study of the Ružín Water Reservoir, Slovakia
TLDR
Results allow proposing both parasite models as useful tools to monitor aquatic environmental quality and the decreasing heavy metal burden of the reservoir and its gradual recovery in the course of time to be proposed.
The cestode Atractolytocestus huronensis (Caryophyllidea) continues to spread in Europe: new data on the helminth parasite of the common carp.
TLDR
Rapid dissemination of this cestode in Europe indicates its ability to colonise new regions, and represents another example of man-made introduction of potential pathogens of carp and other farmed fish.
Preliminary phylogenetic analysis of subfamilies of the Proteocephalidea (Eucestoda)
TLDR
Analysis of parasite-host relationships indicated that the basal hosts for the Proteocephalidea are equivocal; siluriform teleosts were, however, the basalhosts for the Nupeliinae + the Monticelliidae and Proteecephalidae subclades and an extensive co-evolutionary history with this host group is postulated.
Genetic polymorphism in Proteocephalus exiguus shown by enzyme electrophoresis
TLDR
Balancing selection is proposed as the mechanism maintaining genetic variation within the species, and six different genotypes at the Got locus distributed in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium suggest remarkable genetic flexibility of P. exiguus.
Endohelminth communities of the perch, Perca fluviatilis (Perciformes, Percidae) from Srebarna Biosphere Reserve, Bulgaria
TLDR
Little seasonal differences were found in the prevalence, abundance and mean infection of helminths, and Perca fluviatilis was reported as a new host record for D. tubifex from the territory of Bulgaria.
Scolex morphology of monozoic cestodes (Caryophyllidea) from the Palaearctic Region: a useful tool for species identification.
TLDR
Based on scolex morphology and relative position of the anterior testes and vitelline follicles, a key is provided to facilitate the routine identification of 20 Palaearctic caryophyllidean taxa.
Re-establishment of the fish parasite fauna in the Tisa River system (Slovakia) after a catastrophic pollution event
TLDR
An extensive survey of helminth parasites in 1,316 freshwater fish representing 31 species from two aquatic ecosystems in southeastern Slovakia characterized by different level of environmental pollution was carried out, finding a remarkable lack of species diversity in the Tisa River.
