Structure-property relationships of a biological mesocrystal in the adult sea urchin spine

A comprehensive analysis of an adult sea urchin spine is presented, and in revealing a complex, hierarchical structure, it is shown how Nature fabricates a material which diffracts as a single crystal of calcite and yet fractures as a glassy material.

The structure of naturally-occurring cinerin C, isolated from the ethanol extract of leaves of Pleurothyrium cinereum (Lauraceae), has previously been established by NMR and HRMS spectroscopy, and its absolute configuration established by circular dichroism measurements.

The CuCo2S4 microflowers exhibit a superior performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline medium compared to CuS, and are associated with the presence of Co3+ sites on which a better adsorption of reactive species formed during the OER can be achieved, thus reducing the O ER charge-transfer resistance.
