BACKGROUND This study evaluated the efficacy and the complications associated with the use of the covered Wallstent in the setting of unresectable malignant biliary obstruction. METHODS Between March 2001 and January 2003, all patients with distal malignant biliary obstruction that required drainage were treated with a covered Wallstent. Every 2 months,(More)
AIM To determine the relationship between accommodative amplitude and central lens thickness/equatorial lens diameter (CLT/ELD) ratio in vertebrates. METHODS Midsagittal sections of lenses from fixed, post mortem eyes from 125 different vertebrate species were photographed. Their CLT/ELD ratios were correlated with independently published measurements of(More)
BACKGROUND The self-expandable metallic stent is increasingly being used for management of malignant biliary strictures. In certain clinical situations, it also may be an alternative treatment for benign strictures. The ability to remove a metallic stent would be advantageous to the management of many biliary strictures, regardless of etiology. METHODS(More)
BACKGROUND CONTEXT Spinal cord herniation is a rare but well-documented condition that has been associated with tethering through the dural defect. Both spinal cord herniation and cord tethering result in progressive myelopathy that can be improved or stabilized with surgical intervention. Most cases of herniation are caused by dural defects in the ventral(More)
The advent of precision medicine in non-small cell lung cancer has remarkably altered the direction of research and improved clinical outcomes. The identification of molecular subsets with differential response to targeted therapies began with the identification of epidermal growth factor receptor mutated tumors in subsets of non-small cell lung cancer(More)
Endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy, EGD) to screen for esophageal varices (EV) is recommended in patients with portal hypertension. Reports indicate that capsule endoscopy (CE) is capable of identifying large/medium varices (L/MV) when the varix comprises more than 25% of the circumference of the field of view. We evaluated the ability of CE to(More)
[reaction: see text] The cross metathesis reactivities of alpha-methylene-gamma-butyrolactone and an alpha-methylene-delta-lactone have been investigated. alpha-Methylene-gamma-butyrolactone undergoes rapid and efficient olefin isomerization in the presence of second-generation metathesis catalysts. However, cross metathesis can be achieved with the(More)
BACKGROUND Mangifera mekongensis (Anacardiaceae) is cultivated for its edible fruit and has been used in traditional Vietnamese medicine for its anti-aging properties and for treating diabetes, vermifuge, and dysentery. As part of a search for biologically active compounds with reduction of the rate of glucose absorption, a screening has been initiated to(More)
We present rate constants and product branching ratios for the reactions of FeOx+ (x = 0-4) with ozone at 500 K. Fe+ is observed to react with ozone at the collision rate to produce FeO+ + O2. The FeO+ in turn reacts with ozone at the collision rate to yield both Fe+ and FeO2+ product channels. Ions up to FeO4+ display similar reactivity patterns.(More)
