We have used the wavelet transform to evaluate the time-frequency content of laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) signals measured simultaneously on the surfaces of free microvascular flaps deprived of sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), and on adjacent intact skin, in humans. It was thereby possible to determine the frequency interval within which SNA manifests… (More)
BACKGROUND The expression of cytochrome P450 (CYP)-dependent mono-oxygenases in the prostate is important, as it will determine the rate of activation of potential carcinogens as well as the metabolism of hormones with implications in diseases of the prostate. In addition, the levels of cytochromes P450 in prostatic tumours may well be determinants of the… (More)
Prostate cancer is a significant cause of death in Western countries and is under the strong influence of androgens. The steroid 5alpha-reductase 2 catalyzes the metabolism of testosterone into the more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone in the prostate gland. The enzyme is a target in pharmacological treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia using… (More)
Data from the Swedish Adverse Reactions Advisory Committee suggest that use of clozapine is associated with venous thromboembolic complications. We summarise 12 cases of thromboembolism during clozapine treatment. In five cases the outcome was fatal.
Testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone by 5 alpha-reductase2 in the prostate. Dihydrotestosterone controls cell division, and interindividual differences in prostatic 5 alpha-reductase 2 expression and activity may be a determinant of the risk of developing prostate cancer. However, little is known about interindividual differences in… (More)
Finger skin blood flow was measured in 80 healthy subjects, using laser Doppler imaging during basal vasodilatation at a local temperature of 40 degrees C. The response to cooling of the contralateral hand at 15 degrees C was studied. A vasoconstriction index was calculated in all subjects and a nomogram was constructed, taking age into consideration.… (More)
Androgens are implicated in the development of prostate cancer (CAP) and benign prostate hyperplasia. The conversion of testosterone to the more potent metabolite dihydrotestosterone by prostatespecific steroid 5 alpha-reductase type 2 (5 alpha-red2) is a key mechanism in the action of androgens in the prostate and is important in the promotion and… (More)
The starting point of blood coagulation in vivo is the formation of a complex between tissue factor (TF), which is exposed following vascular disease or trauma, and activated blood coagulation factor VII (FVIIa). This blinded, random, paired study evaluates whether active site-blocked activated FVII (FVIIai, ASIS), which binds avidly to TF but is unable to… (More)
In free flap surgery, restored blood flow following a lengthy ischaemic period may lead to necrosis as a result of ischaemia/reperfusion (IR) injury. This injury comprises both proinflammatory and prothrombotic events, where the tissue factor/factor VIIa complex probably has a key role. Active site-inactivated factor VIIa (FFR-rFVIIa) exerts an… (More)
In a free flap procedure on the thigh, thrombosis occurred repeatedly. The problem was solved with a technique that took advantage of the retrograde blood flow of the posterior tibial artery.
