Much remains unknown of the phylogeny and evolution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, an organism that kills 2 million people annually. Using a population-based approach that analyzes multiple loci around the chromosome, we demonstrate that neutral genetic variation in genes associated with antimicrobial drug resistance has sufficient variation to construct a(More)
Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the Brucella species cause chronic infections that can result in undulant fever, arthritis, and osteomyelitis in humans. Remarkably, Brucella sp. genomes encode a protein, named TcpB, that bears significant homology with mammalian Toll/IL-1 receptor domains and whose expression causes degradation of the phosphorylated,(More)
HIV (ie, HIV-1) epidemics in Asia show great diversity, both in severity and timing. But epidemics in Asia are far from over and several countries including China, Indonesia, and Vietnam have growing epidemics. Several factors affect the rate and magnitude of growth of HIV prevalence, but two of the most important are the size of the sex worker population(More)
STUDY DESIGN In vitro biotribological investigation. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the wear resistance and long-term biodurability of NUBAC, a PEEK-on-PEEK articulating nucleus replacement device, using a series of wear tests with different motion profiles, test frequencies, and environmental conditions. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Wear resistance is critical(More)
OBJECTIVE This study investigated length of stay, readmission rates, and postoperative mortality in adult patients undergoing traditional and laparoscopic appendectomy in England between April 1, 1996, and March 31, 2006. METHODS All procedures coded to the "H01-Emergency Excision of Appendix" procedure code in the Hospital Episode Statistics database(More)
Patient dissatisfaction with breast size after breast implant surgery can lead to early secondary procedures in a minority of cases. Different systems of sizing a patient preoperatively have been proposed, including detailed measurements and computer-assisted assessment. Whatever system is used, a surgeon needs to obtain feedback to ascertain that the(More)
The hypothesis for this study was that the simulated wear behavior of a hydroxyapatite coated, self-mating PEEK cervical disc arthroplasty device would be dependent on the simulated testing environment. Five groups of devices were evaluated under suggested ASTM and ISO load and motion profiles. The groups utilized different testing frequencies and protein(More)
This paper investigates the relationship between housing prices and the quality of public schools in the Australian Capital Territory. To disentangle the effects of schools and other neighbourhood characteristics on the value of residential properties, we compare sale prices of homes on either side of high school attendance boundaries. We find that a 5(More)
This is a case report of an 85-year old patient who presented with abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting associated with altered liver function test. The plain X-rays and CT scan showed pneumobilia with an ectopic gallstone. The patient was diagnosed with Bouveret syndrome and managed surgically. The report is followed by a discussion about Bouveret syndrome.
