The intense magnetic field generated by the 20 megaampere Z machine @R. B. Spielman et al., Phys. Plasmas 5, 2105 ~1998!# at Sandia National Laboratories is being used as a pressure source for material science studies. An application we have studied in great detail involves using the intense magnetic field to accelerate flyer plates ~small metal disks! to(More)
Hot dense capsule implosions driven by Z-pinch x rays have been measured using a approximately 220 eV dynamic Hohlraum to implode 1.7-2.1 mm diameter gas-filled CH capsules. The capsules absorbed up to approximately 20 kJ of x rays. Argon tracer atom spectra were used to measure the T(e) approximately 1 keV electron temperature and the n(e) approximately(More)
We report on unique particle-in-cell simulations to understand the relativistic electron beam thermalization and subsequent heating of highly compressed plasmas. The simulations yield heated core parameters in good agreement with the GEKKO-PW experimental measurements, given reasonable assumptions of laser-to-electron coupling efficiency and the(More)
A simple model is constructed to evaluate the temporal evolution of azimuthal clumping instabilities in a cylindrical array of current-carrying wires. An analytic scaling law is derived, which shows that randomly seeded perturbations evolve at the rate of the fastest unstable mode, almost from the start. This instability is entirely analogous to the Jeans(More)

The intense magnetic field generated in the 20 MA Z-machine is used to accelerate flyer plates to high velocity for EOS experiments. A peak magnetic drive pressure on the order M s . In a planned refurbishment of Z, called ZR, it is expected that up to 26 MA will be of 2 Mbar can be generated, which accelerates an approximately 0.2 g aluminum (AI) disc to(More)
Detailed spectroscopic diagnostics of the stagnating plasma in two disparate z pinches allow, for the first time, the examination of the plasma properties within a 1D shock wave picture, demonstrating a good agreement with this picture. The conclusion is that for a wide range of imploding-plasma masses and current amplitudes, in experiments optimizing(More)
We present observations for 20-MA wire-array z pinches of an extended wire ablation period of 57%+/-3% of the stagnation time of the array and non-thin-shell implosion trajectories. These experiments were performed with 20-mm-diam wire arrays used for the double- z -pinch inertial confinement fusion experiments [M. E. Cuneo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 215004(More)
