The clinical characteristics of vertebrobasilar dissecting aneurysms occurring with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) were reviewed in 42 patients, with particular focus on the time, incidence, and outcome in association with subsequent rupture. Twenty-nine patients underwent 31 surgical procedures, and the remaining 13 patients were managed without surgery.(More)
UNLABELLED The aims of this study were to determine whether body weight or body surface area (BSA) should be used for noninvasive measurement of the cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (CMRGlc) by FDG PET with a standardized input function (SIF) and an autoradiographic method and to validate the procedure in a large population from different PET centers. High tibial osteotomy (HTO) was performed on 86 medially osteoarthritic knees in 78 patients. Twelve patients died during the follow-up period. Fifty-six knees of 51 patients were evaluated twice postoperatively: once at six years after surgery and again after ten to 15 years. Results were satisfactory in 88% of the knees at the six-year follow-up(More)
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES In spite of the much evidence for the beneficial effects of probiotics, their anti-obesity effects have not been well examined. We evaluated the effects of the probiotic Lactobacillus gasseri SBT2055 (LG2055) on abdominal adiposity, body weight and other body measures in adults with obese tendencies. SUBJECTS/METHODS We conducted a(More)
AIM Vascular calcification, which significantly increases cardiovascular and other causes of mortality, is highly prevalent in hemodialysis patients. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between serum magnesium levels and vascular calcification in hemodialysis patients. METHODS 390 nondiabetic patients on maintenance hemodialysis(More)
OBJECTIVE To study the in vitro effect of estrogen on IgG anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibody and total IgG production in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), in order to elucidate its regulatory role in SLE. METHODS PBMC from SLE patients and normal donors were cultured with(More)
UNLABELLED This study evaluates the effects of hyperglycemia on fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the human brain and in brain tumors. METHODS We performed glucose loading during FDG PET studies in nine patients with brain tumors (eight gliomas and one brain metastasis) and one with resected glioma. Two FDG PET scans were obtained in all cases within 1(More)
We studied the in vitro effect of testosterone on spontaneous immunoglobulin production by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Testosterone inhibited IgG and IgM production by PBMC both from males and females. The inhibitory effect of testosterone was revealed at doses more than 1 nM, increased dose-dependently, and reached a plateau at 100 nM.(More)
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has five isoforms (VEGF206, 189, 165, 145 and 121). Increased VEGF expression in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is associated with angiogenesis, but, it is not apparent which isoform is involved in this effect. We examined the isoform patterns of VEGF by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in 47(More)
UNLABELLED The purpose of this study was to propose and validate a method for the noninvasive measurement of cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (CMRGlc) by fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET with a standardized input function (SIF) and an autoradiographic method. METHODS Plasma input functions, measured by intermittent arterial blood samplings after the(More)
