We describe a malignant granular cell tumor in the semimembranosus muscle of a 61-year-old woman. Magnetic resonance images disclosed a tumor with intermediate and low signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted images, measuring about 7 x 4 x 4 cm in size. The patient showed an uneventful clinical course during a 30-month follow-up period after the wide(More)
The clinical characteristics of vertebrobasilar dissecting aneurysms occurring with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) were reviewed in 42 patients, with particular focus on the time, incidence, and outcome in association with subsequent rupture. Twenty-nine patients underwent 31 surgical procedures, and the remaining 13 patients were managed without surgery.(More)
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES In spite of the much evidence for the beneficial effects of probiotics, their anti-obesity effects have not been well examined. We evaluated the effects of the probiotic Lactobacillus gasseri SBT2055 (LG2055) on abdominal adiposity, body weight and other body measures in adults with obese tendencies. SUBJECTS/METHODS We conducted a(More)
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a well known factor that induces angiogenesis. Four isoforms, i.e. VEGF206, 189, 165, and 121, have been identified. We examined the isoform patterns of VEGF mRNA using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis in 61 colon cancers. All the colon cancers examined expressed VEGF121. The(More)
UNLABELLED This study evaluates the effects of hyperglycemia on fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the human brain and in brain tumors. METHODS We performed glucose loading during FDG PET studies in nine patients with brain tumors (eight gliomas and one brain metastasis) and one with resected glioma. Two FDG PET scans were obtained in all cases within 1(More)
We studied the in vitro effect of testosterone on spontaneous immunoglobulin production by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Testosterone inhibited IgG and IgM production by PBMC both from males and females. The inhibitory effect of testosterone was revealed at doses more than 1 nM, increased dose-dependently, and reached a plateau at 100 nM.(More)
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has five isoforms (VEGF206, 189, 165, 145 and 121). Increased VEGF expression in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is associated with angiogenesis, but, it is not apparent which isoform is involved in this effect. We examined the isoform patterns of VEGF by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in 47(More)
OBJECTIVE To study the in vitro effect of estrogen on IgG anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibody and total IgG production in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), in order to elucidate its regulatory role in SLE. METHODS PBMC from SLE patients and normal donors were cultured with(More)
Penicillin X methyl ester was transformed into three types of dimer by laccase from Coriolus versicolor. The dimers are considered to be formed by free-radical addition of phenoxy radicals produced by laccase. The enzyme reaction with the ester as substrate was more suitable for forming dimers than that with the sodium salt as substrate. Penicillin X(More)
Stepwise multiple regression analysis (forward method) was performed with 22 gait variables obtained from the free and slow gait of 35 normal controls (women without knee arthropathy). These 22 variables were target variables, and velocity, age, body height, and body weight were explanatory variables. Velocity showed the greatest effect on the gait(More)
