Genotype I of Japanese encephalitis virus first appeared in Taiwan in 2008. Phylogenetic analysis of 37 viruses from pig farms in 2009-2010 classified these viruses into 2 unique subclusters of genotype I viruses and suggested multiple introductions and swift replacement of genotype III by genotype I virus in Taiwan.
The experiment was aimed to test the efficacy of sugar cane extract (SCE) on the modulation of pig immunity under field conditions. The SCE preparation consisted of sugar cane extract (20%) and oilcake of rice bran (80%). SCE (500 mg/kg of body weight per day) was fed to weanling pigs on 3 consecutive days per week for 4 weeks. The results showed a(More)
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular risk-related markers in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) have not been well understood. METHODS Serum and urine samples for biochemical and immunologic analysis were collected from 204 normal subjects and 257 type 2 DM patients, the latter of which were further classified by different diabetic duration with or without retinopathy.(More)
One hundred fifty-eight Salmonella strains isolated from pork carcasses in a nationwide screening program in Taiwan from 2000 through 2003 were analyzed for serotype distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility. Twenty Salmonella serotypes were obtained, among which Derby, Anatum, Typhimurium, and Schwarzengrund were the most frequently isolated,(More)
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We conducted serological and virological surveillance of pig farms in Taiwan from areas epidemic for low pathogenic avian influenza virus (AIV), H5N2 subtype, in order to determine the prevalence of AIV and swine influenza virus (SIV) in 2004. METHODS Pig sera from 9833 animals from 1974 farms in 9 counties were examined using agar(More)
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (AP) is the causative agent of swine pleuropneumonia, a fibrinous, exudative, hemorrhagic, necrotizing pleuropneumonia affecting all ages of pigs. Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae exotoxins (Apx) are one of the major virulence factors of AP. Due to the complex nature of Apx toxins produced by AP, little is known regarding the(More)
BACKGROUND Melamine (M), which is composed of multi-amine, has been used as a food additive to falsely increase protein contents. Furthermore, cyanuric acid (CA) is a derivative of melamine. It is known that these mixtures can cause renal toxicity. METHODS The objective of this study was to investigate the possible target cells during acute renal toxicity(More)
BACKGROUND Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I plays an important role for maintaining cardiac functions. We clarified the unknown role of IGF-axis in rheumatic heart disease (RHD). METHOD Interleukin (IL)-10, growth hormone (GH), IGF, IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-3 and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) were measured by ELISA and zymography in 30 age(More)
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae exotoxins (Apx) are major virulence factors that play important roles in the pathogenesis of pleuropneumonia in swine. A previous study has demonstrated that native ApxI at low concentrations induces apoptosis in primary porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs) via a caspase-3-dependent pathway. However, the molecular mechanisms(More)
Flavones found in plants display various biological activities, including anti-allergic, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidation, and anti-tumor effects. In this study, we investigated the anti-tumor effects of flavone, apigenin and luteolin on human breast cancer cells. The anti-cancer activity of flavone, apigenin and luteolin was investigated using(More)
