Linker histone H1 plays an important role in chromatin folding in vitro. To study the role of H1 in vivo, mouse embryonic stem cells null for three H1 genes were derived and were found to have 50% of the normal level of H1. H1 depletion caused dramatic chromatin structure changes, including decreased global nucleosome spacing, reduced local chromatin… (More)
Some diagrams were prepared with Boersma and Weenink's (2000) freely available Praat program.
We report on two recent medium-scale initiatives annotating present day English corpora for animacy distinctions. We discuss the relevance of animacy for computational linguistics, specifically generation, the annotation categories used in the two studies and the interannotator reliability for one of the studies.
Natural uses of dative constructions in English reveal that the boundaries between categoricity and gradience are fluid in both lexicon and grammar. 1 In the lexicon, the mapping between semantic classes of dative verbs and alternative syntactic constructions rests on probabilistic biases rather than strict categories. In the grammar of argument type… (More)
MENT is a developmentally regulated heterochromatin-associated protein that condenses chromatin in terminally differentiated avian blood cells. Its homology to the serpin protein family suggests that the conserved serpin reactive center loop (RCL) and the unique M-loop are important for its function. To examine the role of these domains, we studied the… (More)
The termini of eukaryotic chromosomes contain specialized protective structures, the telomeres, composed of TTAGGG repeats and associated proteins which, together with telomerase, control telomere length. Telomere shortening is associated with senescence and inappropriate telomerase activity may lead to cancer. Little is known about the chromatin context of… (More)
The NITE XML Toolkit (NXT) provides library support for working with multimodal language corpora. We describe our experiences in using it to study discourse effects on syntactic choice using the parsed Switchboard Corpus as a starting point, as a case study for others who may wish to adopt similar techniques using NXT or one of the other libraries that are… (More)
Influence of the chronic administration of ropren (Trademark)--a plant preparation based on the neutral fraction of extract of spruce and pine needles--on affective status in male rats with amyloid peptide (Abeta(25-35)) induced amnesia has been studied. Ropren was administered per os in a dose of 8.6 mg/kg for 28 days. Anxiety, depressive-like behavior,… (More)
