Let M and N be compact manifolds with ∂M = ∅. We show that when 1 < p < dim M , there are two different obstructions to extending a map in W 1−1/p,p (∂M, N) to a map in W 1,p (M, N). We characterize one of these obstructions which is topological in nature. We also give properties of the other obstruction.
Hypoxia-inducible factor-2α (HIF-2α, or EPAS1) is important for cancer progression, and is a putative biomarker for poor prognosis for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, molecular mechanisms underlying the EPAS1 overexpression are not still fully understood. We explored a role of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs13419896 located within… (More)
BACKGROUND Pulmonary adenocarcinomas with a micropapillary component having small papillary tufts and lacking a central fibrovascular core are thought to result in poor prognosis. However, the component consists of tumor cells often floating within alveolar spaces (aerogenous micropapillary component [AMPC]) rather than invading fibrotic stroma observed in… (More)
Generally, adenocarcinomas with micropapillary pattern, featuring small papillary tufts lacking a central fibrovascular core, are thought to have poor prognosis. This pattern has been described in various organs. However, tumor cells with micropapillary pattern of lung adenocarcinoma are more often seen to float within alveolar spaces (aerogenous… (More)
BACKGROUND A high incidence of interstitial lung disease (ILD) has been reported in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs), particularly in Japanese populations. A previous report from our laboratory demonstrated that KL-6 was a useful serum biomarker to… (More)
BACKGROUND Cough is one of the most common reasons for visiting a clinic. The causes of cough differ according to the duration of cough. Infectious disease is commonly observed in acute cough while noninfectious disease is commonly observed in chronic cough. On the other hand, cough is frequently observed in patients with asthma/cough variant asthma (CVA).… (More)
In this paper, we give an optimal regularity result for some class of weakly harmonic maps from a Riemannian manifold M into a static Lorentzian manifold. Our main result is the following: For such class of weakly harmonic map w, there exists closed set M such that w is C 1 in M n and the Hausdorr dimension of is less than or equal to dim M ? 3.
Exogenous lipoid pneumonia is caused by aspiration or inhalation of oily substances. Generally, lipoid pneumonia has non-specific clinical and radiological presentations and may be misdiagnosed as bacterial pneumonia. Our patient, a 68-year-old man who had been diagnosed with pneumonia on three previous occasions, was admitted to our hospital with a fourth… (More)
BACKGROUND Acute pneumonia is a serious problem in the elderly and various risk factors have already been reported, but the involvement of QTc interval prolongation remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to elucidate the prognostic factors for the development of pneumonia in elderly patients and to study the possible involvement of QTc interval… (More)
BACKGROUND Screening tests are available to determine immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases, such as mumps and rubella. We aimed to define better assay for detecting immune status of health care personnel to vaccine-preventable diseases. METHODS Mumps and rubella antibodies of health care personnel at Shimane University Hospital were examined by… (More)
