It is demonstrated that leptin is a proliferative and migratory factor for VSMC, implying that leptin may play a role in the formation and development of vascular lesions.

Investigation of the effect of trichostatin A (TSA), a specific and potent HDAC inhibitor, on the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells isolated from rat thoracic aorta found it inhibits VSMC proliferation via the induction of p21(WAF1) expression and subsequent cell-cycle arrest with reduction of the phosphorylation of Rb protein at the G1-S phase.
Activation of Akt/protein kinase B after stimulation with angiotensin II in vascular smooth muscle cells.

- Biology, ChemistryAmerican Journal of Physiology. Heart and…
- 1 June 1999
Results indicate that ANG II stimulates Akt/PKB activity via AT1 receptors in VSMC and that the activities of tyrosine kinase and PI3K are required for this activation.
Elevated remnant-like lipoprotein particles in impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetic patients.

High serum RLP-C and R LP-TG levels in IGT and diabetic patients may represent an increased risk of atherosclerosis in these patients, and the incidence of remnant hyperlipoproteinemia in normocholesterolemic subjects was up to four times higher in I GT and diabetic groups compared with the normal group.

- Biology, ChemistryAmerican Journal of Physiology. Heart and…
- 1 April 1998
Results indicate that ANG II induces tyrosine phosphorylation of p130Cas and c-Crk II and their specific association, suggesting a potential role of the p130 Cas-c- Crk II complex in ANG II signal transduction in VSMC.

Results indicate that ANG II stimulates Akt/PKB activity via AT1 receptors in VSMC and that the activities of tyrosine kinase and PI3K are required for this activation.
Tranilast inhibits vascular smooth muscle cell growth and intimal hyperplasia by induction of p21(waf1/cip1/sdi1) and p53.

Data demonstrate that inhibition of CDK2/CDK4 activities by the increased expression of p21 may be one mechanism by which tranilast inhibits SMC proliferation and prevents postangioplasty restenosis.
