The LHCb detector at the LHC
The LHCb experiment is dedicated to precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays of B hadrons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN (Geneva). The initial configuration and expected…
Hibernation versus Daily Torpor in Mammals and Birds: Physiological Variables and Classification of Torpor Patterns
Comparisons of several physiological variables appear to justify a distinction between the two torpor patterns, but of all variables tested, only the frequency distributions of maximum torpor bout duration and the minimum V̇o2 showed a clear gap between daily heterotherms and hibernators.
Daily torpor and hibernation in birds and mammals
The analysis strongly supports the view that hibernators and daily heterotherms are functionally distinct groups that probably have been subject to disruptive selection.
Population dynamics in wild boar Sus scrofa: ecology, elasticity of growth rate and implications for the management of pulsed resource consumers
The population dynamics of wild boar is investigated to assist the development of effective management strategies for this species and possibly for other pulsed resource consumers, and management strategies should be based on separate elasticity analyses for different environmental conditions.
The Lomb-Scargle Periodogram in Biological Rhythm Research: Analysis of Incomplete and Unequally Spaced Time-Series
- T. Ruf
- Environmental Science
- 1 April 1999
The Lomb–Scargle periodogram may serve as a useful method for the study of biological rhythms, especially when applied to telemetrical or observational time-series obtained from free-living animals, i.e., data sets that notoriously lack points.
A facility to Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) at the CERN SPS
A new general purpose fixed target facility is proposed at the CERN SPS accelerator which is aimed at exploring the domain of hidden particles and make measurements with tau neutrinos. Hidden…
Measurement of form-factor-independent observables in the decay B0→K(*0)μ(+)μ(-).
A measurement of form-factor-independent angular observables in the decay B(0)→K*(892)(0)μ(+)μ(-) is presented, based on a data sample collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV.
Prompt charm production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
Photoperiod and Thermoregulation in Vertebrates: Body Temperature Rhythms and Thermogenic Acclimation

This work shows that photoperiodic control not only affects energy balance indirectly via the control of repro duction or body mass, but may directly interact with central control of thermoregulation and may influence the process of acclimatization.
Test of lepton universality in beauty-quark decays
The standard model of particle physics currently provides our best description of fundamental particles and their interactions. The theory predicts that the different charged leptons, the electron,…
