Ultra‐high‐resolution scanning electron microscopy of mitochondria and sarcoplasmic reticulum arrangement in human red, white, and intermediate muscle fibers
Scanning electron microscopy was used on specially prepared specimens to determine the distinctive features of mitochondria and sarcoplasmic reticulum in each fiber type. Expand
Scanning electron-microscopic studies on the three-dimensional structure of mitochondria in the mammalian red, white and intermediate muscle fibers
SummaryThe three-dimensional structure and arrangement of mitochondria in the red, white and intermediate striated muscle fibers of the rat were examined under a field-emission type scanning electron… Expand
HISTOCHEMICAL STUDY OF OXIDATIVE ENZYMES IN VERTEBRATE MUSCLES
Most of the mammalian striated muscle fibers fell into three types following a histochemical demonstration of oxidative enzyme reaction: Small red muscle fibers showed higher activities of oxidative enzymes, while large white fibers lower activities and the third type of fibers, "medium fiber" which were intermediate in size showed activities between red and white muscle fibers. It is speculated that the multi-layered capillary networks of the proximal colon are closely related to the greater water absorption and electrolyte transport activities compared to those of the distal colon. Expand
High‐resolution scanning electron microscopic studies on the three‐dimensional structure of the transverse‐axial tubular system, sarcoplasmic reticulum and intercalated disc of the rat myocardium
The three‐dimensional structure of the transverse‐axial tubular system, sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), and intercalated disc of the rat left ventricle was examined by high‐resolution scanning electron… Expand

The morphological features of the motor endplate in each of these fiber types of the mammalian, avian, reptilian, amphibian, and fish skeletal muscles are reviewed and special emphasis has been placed on the three-dimensional structure of theMotor endplates of the different fiber types as observed by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. A morphological study on the histogenesis of human colorectal hyperplastic polyps
Hyperplastic polyps originate by the apparent fusion of single abnormal crypts within a small region of mucosa and grow by fission of the crypt and fusion of the polycentrically originated polyps. Expand
Bicarbonate secretion by rat bile duct brush cells indicated by immunohistochemical localization of CFTR, anion exchanger AE2, Na+/HCO3− cotransporter, carbonic anhydrase II, Na+/H+ exchangers NHE1…

Results strongly suggest that BCs are a significant source of HCO3− secretion, after secretin or meal stimulation. Expand
Ultra-high resolution scanning electron microscopic studies on the sarcoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria in various muscles: a review.
The three-dimensional structure of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), transverse (T)-axial tubular system and mitochondria in various muscles was examined by means of ultra-high resolution scanning… Expand
