Two Distinct Mechanisms Cause Heterogeneity of 16S rRNA

To investigate the frequency of heterogeneity among the multiple 16S rRNA genes within a single microorganism, direct sequencing patterns revealed the existence of 136 heterogeneous loci among a total of 33 strains, suggesting that at least two mechanisms, possibly misincorporation during DNA replication and horizontal gene transfer, cause rRNA heterogeneity.

Based on the properties of strain IC-180(T) determined in this polyphasic taxonomic study, this strain represents a novel species in a new genus in the order Acidimicrobiales, for which the name Aciditerrimonas ferrireducens gen. nov. is proposed.
