Properties of porcine white adipose tissue and liver mitochondrial subpopulations.
Adipose tissue mitochondrial subpopulations would seem to possess a comparable oxidative capacity per gram mitochondrial protein, while liver heavy mitochondria possess an increased oxidative capacity and mass, suggesting an increased mitochondrial mass rather than a functional difference. Expand
Cytotoxic activity of selected Nigerian plants.
Sapium ellipticum leaves showed activity comparable to the reference compound Cisplatin and greater cytotoxic activity than Combretum paniculatum, Celosia trigyna, Drymaria cordata, Cyathula achyranthoides and Cyathulas prostata. Expand
Sutherlandia frutescens limits the development of insulin resistance by decreasing plasma free fatty acid levels
This study has shown for the first time that Sutherlandia frutescens reduces plasma free fatty acid levels in rats fed a high fat diet, thereby preventing the development of insulin resistance and therefore DMT2. Expand
Caspase-dependent apoptosis is induced by Artemisia afra Jacq. ex Willd in a mitochondria-dependent manner after G2/M arrest
Investigation of the mode of cell death induced by an ethanolic A. afra extract suggests that the plant potentially has medicinal anticancer properties. Expand
Cytotoxicity evaluation of selected Nigerian plants used in traditional cancer treatment
Sapium exhibited a greater cytotoxic activity than all the plants tested and this provides scientific evidence to support the traditional use of the plant, which is also comparable to the activity of the reference compound Cisplatin in the MCF-7 cell line. Expand
Influence of pre-treatment on yield chemical and antioxidant properties of a Nigerian okra seed (Abelmoschus esculentus moench) flour.
Pre-treatment by soaking and blanching were found to increase yield which was time dependent and DPPH radical scavenging activity increase was observed in soaked samples at 18th-h while blanched resulted into progressive decrease. Expand
Effect of Sutherlandia frutescens on the Lipid Metabolism in an Insulin Resistant Rat Model and 3T3‐L1 Adipocytes
Results indicate that S. frutescens directly affects mitochondrial activity and lipid biosynthesis in adipose tissue and provide a mechanism by which S.frutescens can restore insulin sensitivity by modulating fatty acid biosynthesis. Expand
Antiproliferative mechanism of the methanolic extract of Enterolobium cyclocarpum (Jacq.) Griseb. (Fabaceae).
The study demonstrated the potential antiproliferative activity of Enterolobium cyclocarpum thereby supporting the traditional claim and provides basis for further mechanistic studies and isolation of active constituents. Expand
JLK1486, a N,N‐[(8‐hydroxyquinoline)methyl]‐substituted benzylamine analogue, inhibits melanoma proliferation and induces autophagy
To investigate anti‐proliferatory activity of a selected N,N‐[(8‐hydroxyquinoline)methyl]‐substituted benzylamine (JLK1486) on melanoma cells and to characterize its mechanism of cell populationExpand
