The DNA sequence of human chromosome 21
- M. Hattori, A. Fujiyama, M. Yaspo
- BiologyNature
- 18 May 2000
The sequence and gene catalogue of the long arm of chromosome 21, the smallest human autosome, is reported, and structural features identified include duplications that are probably involved in chromosomal abnormalities and repeat structures in the telomeric and pericentromeric regions.
Embryogenesis: Demethylation of the zygotic paternal genome
- W. Mayer, A. Niveleau, J. Walter, R. Fundele, T. Haaf
- BiologyNature
- 3 February 2000
It is shown that the paternal genome in the mouse is significantly and actively demethylated within 6–8 hours of fertilization, before the onset of DNA replication, whereas the maternal genome is dem methylated after several cleavage divisions.
A duplicated copy of DMRT1 in the sex-determining region of the Y chromosome of the medaka, Oryzias latipes
- I. Nanda, M. Kondo, M. Schartl
- BiologyProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences…
- 22 August 2002
It is found that in the fish medaka the Y chromosome-specific region spans only about 280 kb and contains a duplicated copy of the autosomal DMRT1 gene, named D MRT1Y, which is the only functional gene in this chromosome segment and maps precisely to the male sex-determining locus.
Nuclear foci of mammalian recombination proteins are located at single-stranded DNA regions formed after DNA damage.
- E. Raderschall, E. Golub, T. Haaf
- Biology, ChemistryProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences…
- 2 March 1999
A sensitive and rapid in situ method was developed to visualize sites of single-stranded (ss) DNA in cultured cells and in experimental test animals, suggesting that these are sites of recombinational DNA repair.

The sequence and gene catalogue of the long arm of chromosome 21, the smallest human autosome, is reported and structural features identified include duplications that are probably involved in chromosomal abnormalities and repeat structures in the telomeric and pericentromeric regions.
Nuclear foci of mammalian Rad51 recombination protein in somatic cells after DNA damage and its localization in synaptonemal complexes.
- T. Haaf, E. Golub, G. Reddy, C. Radding, D. Ward
- BiologyProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences…
- 14 March 1995
It is concluded that the mammalian proteins homologous to yeast Rad51 are involved in repair of DNA damage and recombinational repair during meiosis.
Spatial Separation of Parental Genomes in Preimplantation Mouse Embryos
- W. Mayer, Avril Smith, R. Fundele, T. Haaf
- BiologyJournal of Cell Biology
- 21 February 2000
Topological separation of parental genomes in preimplantation mouse embryos is demonstrated using two different experimental approaches: mouse eggs fertilized with 5-bromodeoxyuridine-labeled sperm followed by detection of BrdU in early diploid embryos, and differential heterochromatin staining in mouse interspecific hybrid embryos.
