We present the results of searches for nucleon decay via n → ¯ νπ 0 and p → ¯ νπ þ using data from a combined 172.8 kt · yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande-I,-II, and-III. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes: τ n→¯ νπ 0 > 1.1 × 10 33 years and τ p→¯ νπ þ > 3.9 × 10 32 years at a 90% confidence level.
A search for the relic neutrinos from all past core-collapse supernovae was conducted using 1496 days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector. This analysis looked for electron-type anti-neutrinos that had produced a positron with an energy greater than 18 MeV. In the absence of a signal, 90% C.L. upper limits on the total flux were set for several(More)
During endochondral bone development, the first osteoblasts differentiate in the perichondrium surrounding avascular cartilaginous rudiments; the source of trabecular osteoblasts inside the later bone is, however, unknown. Here, we generated tamoxifen-inducible transgenic mice bred to Rosa26R-LacZ reporter mice to follow the fates of stage-selective subsets(More)
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) commonly defined by in vitro functions have entered clinical application despite little definition of their function in residence. Here, we report genetic pulse-chase experiments that define osteoblastic cells as short-lived and nonreplicative, requiring replenishment from bone-marrow-derived, Mx1(+) stromal cells with "MSC"(More)
Alkaline protease (EC 3.4.21.14) activity, suitable for use in detergents, was detected in the alkaline culture medium of Bacillus sp. KSM-K16, which was originally isolated from soil. The enzyme, designated M protease, was purified to homogeneity from the culture broth by column chromatographies. The N-terminal amino acid sequence was(More)
Using a High Efficiency Genome Scanning (HEGS) system and recombinant inbred (RI) lines derived from the cross of Russia 6 and H.E.S. 4, a high-density genetic map was constructed in barley. The resulting 1,595.7-cM map encompassed 1,172 loci distributed on the seven linkage groups comprising 1,134 AFLP, 34 SSR, three STS and vrs1 (kernel row type) loci.(More)
A highly alkaline endo-1,4-β-glucanase (Egl) was purified to homogeneity from a culture broth of alkaliphilic Bacillus sp. strain KSM-N252. The optimal pH for activity was as high as 10, and the optimal temperature was 55°C. The molecular mass and isoelectric point were around 50 kDa and pH 4.2, respectively. The enzyme hydrolyzed carboxymethyl cellulose in(More)
A continuous noninvasive method of systolic blood pressure estimation is described. Systolic blood pressure is estimated by combining two separately obtained components: a higher frequency component obtained by extracting a specific frequency band of pulse arrival time and a lower frequency component obtained from the intermittently acquired systolic blood(More)
The JHF-Kamioka neutrino project is a second generation long base line neutrino oscillation experiment that probes physics beyond the Standard Model by high precision measurements of the neutrino masses and mixing. A high intensity narrow band neutrino beam is produced by secondary pions created by a high intensity proton synchrotron at JHF (JAERI). The(More)
Postnatal bone marrow houses mesenchymal progenitor cells that are osteoblast precursors. These cells have established therapeutic potential, but they are difficult to maintain and expand in vitro, presumably because little is known about the mechanisms controlling their fate decisions. To investigate the potential role of Notch signaling in(More)
