Cadmium may induce oxidative damage in different tissues by enhancing peroxidation of membrane lipids and altering the antioxidant system of the cells. The peroxidative damage to the cell membrane may cause injury to cellular components due to the interaction of metal ions with the cell organelles. The treatment with Cd (0.4 mg/kg body wt, ip) significantly(More)
Two major peroxidases are secreted by the fungus Pleurotus eryngii in lignocellulose cultures. One is similar to Phanerochaete chrysosporium manganese-dependent peroxidase. The second protein (PS1), although catalyzing the oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn3+ by H2O2, differs from the above enzymes by its manganese-independent activity enabling it to oxidize(More)
In this study we purified and investigated the catalytic properties of a manganese peroxidase isoenzyme produced by the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus in liquid medium with peptone as nitrogen source. The isoenzyme was purified to homogeneity by chromatography on Bio-Rad Q-cartridge, Sephacryl S-200 and Mono-Q with activity yield of 59% and a purification(More)
Three bovine group B rotavirus strains were detected from diarrheic calves during a surveillance study of rotaviral diarrhea in West Bengal, India. The sequence analysis of VP7 and NSP5 genes of these strains demonstrates a high degree of sequence variation from other group B rotavirus strains, indicating the emergence of a new genotype.
Somatic sensation can be localized precisely, whereas localization of visceral sensation is vague, possibly reflecting differences in the pattern of somatic and visceral input to the cerebral cortex. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to study the cortical processing of sensation arising from the proximal (somatic) and distal (visceral) esophagus(More)
Cadmium (Cd)-induced oxidative damage in erythrocytes causes loss of membrane function by enhancing lipid peroxidation (LPO) and altering the erythrocyte antioxidant system. Vitamin E and/or selenium (Se) was administered to rats, prior to Cd intoxication, in order to prepare the animals to withstand oxidative assault. The treatment with Cd increased LPO in(More)
BACKGROUND Non-cardiac chest pain mimics angina pectoris but generally originates from the oesophagus. Visceral hypersensitivity may contribute, but its neurophysiological basis is unclear. We investigated whether central sensitisation, an activity-dependent amplification of sensory transfer in the central nervous system, underlies visceral pain(More)
Since 1983 large number of people are being encountered with arsenic toxicity due to drinking of arsenic contaminated water (0.05-3.2 mg/l) in 6 districts of West Bengal. Clinical and various laboratory investigations were carried out on 156 patients to ascertain the nature and degree of morbidity and mortality that occurred due to chronic arsenic toxicity.(More)
Detailed analyses of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers (HCHs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloro ethane (DDT) and its metabolites (DDTs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments from the coastal estuarine environment of(More)
The past few years has witnessed the emergence of CMOS-based circuits operating at millimeter-wave frequencies. Integrated on a low cost organic packaging, this is the promise for high volume fabrication, lowering the cost and opening huge commercial impact opportunities. As standardization efforts catalyze the interest and investment of the industry, one(More)
