Silent stroke is one of the risk factors of dementia. In the present study, we used a novel focal ischemic animal model to investigate the effects of comparatively small changes of cerebral blood flow (CBF) on the expression of beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) mRNA. Focal ischemia was achieved by introducing a 4-0 monofilament to the bifurcation of(More)
Cocrystal structures of wild-type TATA box-binding protein (TBP) recognizing 10 naturally occurring TATA elements have been determined at 2.3-1.8 A resolution, and compared with our 1.9 A resolution structure of TBP bound to the Adenovirus major late promoter (AdMLP) TATA box (5'-TATAAAAG-3'). Minor-groove recognition by the saddle-shaped protein induces(More)
This study examined the effect of exposure to the electromagnetic field emitted by mobile phones on human attention. Three measures of attention were administered to 72 teenagers, 37 of whom were mobile phone users. The results showed that the mobile phone users performed better on one of the three measures of attention than did the non-mobile phone users.(More)
OBJECTIVE Periventricular leukomalacia, a common brain white matter lesion in preterm neonates, is a major risk factor for cerebral palsy. Recently, cytokines (i.e., tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-1(beta)) have been implicated as mediators for the development of periventricular leukomalacia. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship(More)
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between lung-to-head ratio (LHR) and gestational age (GA) in fetuses with isolated left congenital diaphragmatic hernia and to determine the applicability and reliability of LHR to predict postnatal outcome beyond 24-26 weeks of gestation. STUDY DESIGN The institutional review board(More)
We compared routine blood pictures in venous, fingertip and arterial blood and their measurement variation. A pair of venous and fingertip blood samples were simultaneously collected from 24 volunteers, and another pair of venous and arterial samples from another 12 volunteers. The volunteers were healthy adults, aged 20-22 years, with males and females in(More)
Analysis of the heat shock element (HSE)-binding proteins in extracts of rodent cells, during heat shock and their post-heat shock recovery, indicates that the regulation of heat shock response involves a constitutive HSE-binding factor (CHBF), in addition to the heat-inducible heat shock factor HSF1. We purified the CHBF to apparent homogeneity from HeLa(More)
Cerebral ischemia is a risk factor for late onset Alzheimer's disease. Since estrogen replacement therapy benefits the outcome of cerebral stroke in post-menopausal women, we designed the present study to investigate the effects of estrogen on the expression of beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) mRNA following focal ischemia in female rats. Female rats(More)
AIM To find a suitable biocontrol agent for yam anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. METHODS AND RESULTS An actinobacterial strain, MJM5763, showing strong antifungal activity, multiple biocontrol and plant growth-promoting traits was isolated from a yam cultivation field in Yeoju, South Korea. Based on morphological and physiological(More)
This study compared the performance of female Holstein calves fed either whole milk (WM) or milk replacer (MR) having similar gross composition to WM. Calves (n = 20) were separated from their mothers within 2 h of birth, weighed, moved into individual pens, and fed colostrum (10% of their BW over 2 feedings daily) for the first 3 d. Calves were alternately(More)
