BACKGROUND This paper reports population-based data on the prevalence and causes of visual impairment among children and adults in Botucatu, Brazil. METHODS A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted involving a random start point and then systematic sampling of an urban Brazilian population in the city of Botucatu. There were approximately(More)
BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare, benign, and very uncommon lesion in the orbit. Because of its complex and variable clinical and histological appearance the SFT is often misdiagnosed. CASES Two new cases of orbital SFT are reported, one in a man and the other in a woman, both unilateral and in the superomedial orbit. OBSERVATIONS(More)
A retrospective observational study was performed in order to evaluate the possibility of spontaneous resolution of tearing in the congenital nasolacrimal obstruction (CNLO). Twenty-seven CNLO child carriers with spontaneous tearing resolution were evaluated according to sex, age of starting and end of symptoms. The data were evaluated by the Chi-Square(More)
PURPOSE To evaluate the fibroblast proliferation activity of normal Tenon's capsule from primary and recurrent patients with pterygium. METHODS A randomized prospective study was performed with 41 normal Tenon's capsule fragments from 21 primary and 20 recurrent patients with pterygium. The sample was collected from the inferior cul-de-sac. Proliferation(More)
PURPOSE To evaluate a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) implant with and without platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is supposed to accelerate fracture consolidation in the orbit fracture treatment. METHODS Thirty-six white rabbits were subjected to orbital fracture and treated in three groups: BMP implant fracture repair (G1), BMP plus PRP implant fracture(More)
PURPOSE To evaluate normal Tenon capsule fibroblasts and from pterygia in culture when exposed to cyclosporin 0.05%. METHODS A prospective, randomized study was done, involving 20 patients with primary pterygium. Samples of normal and pterygium Tenon's capsule from the same individual were collected, cultured and exposed to cyclosporin 0.05%. RESULTS(More)

Age-related morphological, ultrastructural and morphometric changes in the capillaries of the superficial and deep plexuses of the rat retina were studied in animals aged from 3 to 15 months. Our results suggest that age-related morphological alterations start occurring in the retina of rats at about 12 months of age. Increased glycogen deposits,(More)
Müller cells provide nutrition for neural cells. We studied the structure and ultrastructure of Müller cells in the retina of thirty 3-month old Wistar rats, divided equally into 3 groups: normal rats, alloxan diabetic rats and treated alloxan diabetic rats, 1 and 12 months after induction of diabetes. We observed that the Müller cell nuclei under light(More)
We report three rare cases of ethmoid osteoma extending to the medial quadrant of the orbit that had singular particularities, such as occurring in women, at an unusual age group, and complaint of epiphora. The radiographic images were typical of this condition. Patients were submitted to surgery with complete resolution of the disease.
